STEWART, RODERICK A.
A boyhood fascination with ponds and streams in my hometown of Stewiacke, Nova Scotia gradually matured into an academic pursuit of aquatic ecosystems in later years.
While studying for a Bachelor of Science with specialization in marine biology from 1978 to 1982 at Acadia University, I was employed during the interim summer months with the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries. We conducted various field projects around the province, involving juvenile lobster recruitment and phycology colony evaluation. The outdoor SCUBA experience galvanized my love for the ocean and its natural processes. Those diving adventures inspired a serious interest with photography, initially as a means to document the marvelous ocean fauna and flora.
After graduation, my career continued with various positions in tropical fish retail sales. Then I returned to Dalhousie University in the capacity of tilapia hatchery technician (a complex transgenic project searching for the cure for diabetes). When those studies drew to a close, I moved within the Biology Department of Dalhousie, to my current position as clerk.
Throughout those changes of vocation, my personal time during the past twenty five years has been dedicated to gaining experience with most film formats, and becoming knowledgeable with digital techniques. Recently my images and poetry have been published in China, the United States and the United Kingdom.
Excerpts from my current self-published book “Between Us” may be viewed with my other work at www.pbase.com/east_star.
