SCHAAP, ALBERTA
Born in Sittard (the Netherlands), Alberta moved to New Brunswick Canada with her parents as a young child and later resettled in Amherst, Nova Scotia. She then obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Dalhousie University.
After working in healthcare and studying photography on the side in British Columbia and the Yukon, she returned to Halifax from 1989 to 2005 to work in Multiple Sclerosis Research and obtained a Bachelor in Fine Arts, Mixed Media, from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design (1992),
In 2005, Alberta returned to Amherst when her mother entered palliative care at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. She currently works as an ESL Teacher, with students throughout Western Europe
Alberta’s group exhibits include: “Bodies & Boundaries”, Anna Leonowens Gallery, NSCAD, Halifax, 1992; “Reforming”, OO Gallery, Halifax, 1993; “Night Shift”, Anna Leonowens Gallery, NSCAD, Halifax, 1995; “Journey of the Threaded Needle”, N.S. Centre for Craft & Design, Halifax, 1997; Miksang Contemplative Photography, Shambhala Centre, Halifax, 2000’ “Making Stone Soup”, Your Women’s Creative Art Gallery, YWCA, Halifax, 2004.
She has had solo exhibitions in Halifax, Chester and Pugwash. Her works have been published in Parachute Magazine, the Dalhousie Gazette, and the YWCA Newsletter.
