Above & Beyond Campaign Reaches It's Goal!
Blake Daley, Chairman

The Campaign for Cumberland County's new hospital reached its' goal of $7.5 million for the new regional acute care hospital to serve all residents of the county. To date $7,531,465 has been pledged or donated.

"We are confident that all pledges will be honoured and that we have commitments that will total over $7.5 million by the end of 2002," stated Roger Bacon, Past Chairman of the Highland view Regional Hospital Foundation.

Above and Beyond Campaign Reaches its Goal
Roger Bacon, Past Chairman of HVRH Foundation and Stu Pipe, Above & Beyond Campaign Chairman, present Wayne Tucker, CEO of the Northern Regional Health Board with the community share of the funds for the new regional acute care hospital for Cumberland County.

The Foundation began raising funds for a new hospital in 1993 and announced a public campaign in 1996 when half of the funds had been committed in pledges. "The response was overwhelming; it is obvious that people in Cumberland County want a new hospital and that they have been very generous in their support. We thank each and every person, organization and business that has made a pledge, attended an event or donated in memory of someone," commented Stu Pipe, Chairman of the Above & Beyond Campaign.

Throughout the last three years a volunteer committee of nine has overseen the organization of the campaign and more than forty volunteers have canvassed businesses, organizations and individuals in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and other parts of Canada.

The Campaign was initiated to fulfill the "community share" of the department of Health's regulations that communities must raise 25% of the cost of a new or renovated hospital before the Department will construct or renovate a hospital in Nova Scotia.

Highland View Regional Hospital Foundation's Board of directors will continue to oversee the campaign's pledge system and finances as part of their own operations. The foundation will continue to be the fundraising arm of Highland View Regional Hospital and will raise funds annually to purchase much needed equipment from in memoriam donation, special events, bequests and other forms of donations. back to the top of the page >

Your Hospital Foundation

Blake Daley, HVRH Foundation Chairman
Highland View Regional Hospital Foundation held its' Annual General Meeting on July 2, 1998. As the Board of Directors made up of members of the community, we said a fond farewell and heartfelt "thank you" to the Honourable Roger Bacon who successfully chaired the Foundation since its' inception in 1993. It was through his wisdom, hard work and dedication to the hospital that the very first campaign undertaken by the Foundation has surpassed its' goal.

On behalf of the Board, I also want to thank each and every one of the Above & Beyond Campaign volunteers for all of their time and efforts to ensure that residents of Cumberland County have the new hospital we so deserve. A very special thanks to Mayor Jerry Hallee who chaired the campaign from 1995 until he was elected Mayor of Amherst in the fall of 1997. And, a sincere thank you to Stu Pipe who took over the reins from Jerry and steered the campaign until we reached our goal.

As the Foundation faces the transition from an enormous campaign to raise funds to an annual campaign to raise ongoing equipment funds we are saying good-bye to retiring board members Linda Barteaux, Bill Hopper, Bob Barnes, Cathy Pipe, Marsh Fox and Dianne Allen. Their commitment to health care in our community is truly commendable and their time and efforts will be felt long into the future by all residents of Cumberland County.

We welcome the following new board members: Phyllis Cameron, Greg Herrett, Kathy Maltby, Garry Stack and Doug Steeves.

The Hospital Foundation is truly a community organization for healthcare in Cumberland County. We express our sincere thanks to all the people who have dedicated their efforts to raise funds for the new hospital and to ensure that our current hospital -and our new one -has a strong "Foundation." And, we thank you, our donors, for your ongoing support. back to the top of the page >

Foundation Donors have asked...

What is a "Hospital Foundation"
Hospitals and other healthcare organizations face tough economic challenges: rising costs, less government money for programs and capital equipment, technological advances - the list is endless. Hundreds of hospital foundations have been established all across Canada and the US to deal with these challenges. The Foundation is the fundraising arm of the hospital and coordinates the support of the community for programs, equipment and services not provided with government funds.

Why do we need to have a Hospital foundation?
Shrinking health care budgets have made it necessary for Foundation's to raise funds to make up for the difference between what used to be in the hospital's budget and what it currently received for new equipment or programs.

How does it work?
The hospital has a list of equipment that must be purchased or replaced on an annual basis. Every year the hospital receives funds to purchase new or outdated equipment and to operate hospital programs. Due to shrinking government funds there is always more "list" than money. The list of equipment is then passed on to the Foundation Board of Directors, with medical staff approval, for them to carefully choose which equipment is urgently needed. The Foundation will use donation received from the public to pay for the hospital equipment. Funds that are received are accumulated in accounts for equipment, the building fund or the endowment fund. For example: all pledges and funds raised through the Above & Beyond Campaign are the community's share of the new hospital and donations received to purchase equipment will help by medical equipment.

How will the Foundation raise money?
Memorial Gifts - the Foundation will continue to raise funds through our in memoriam program. Donations in memory of -or- in honour of -someone can be made at all Funeral Homes, at the Hospital Switchboard, mailed in or dropped off at the Foundation office in the hospital. Names of donors and in the memoriams will be listed in the newsletter (names only, not donation amounts).

Community Groups - can contact the Foundation to find out what equipment is urgently needed for their own fundraising efforts. The Foundation has a list of equipment and their costs.

Special Events - the Foundation will host several events on an annual basis to raise funds (ie. the Highland Classic Golf Tournament).

Donations - annually many people make a gift to the Foundation to help with the purchase of equipment. All donations of $1,000 and more will be permanently engraved on the donor wall at the entrance to the new hospital.

Planned Gifts - many people have manned the Foundation in their will so that funds will be received after their passing.

What will happen to the money?
The funds are invested by the Finance Committee under the guidance of the Foundation volunteer Chartered Accountant. When there is enough money to buy a piece of equipment it is ordered and immediately put into use in the Hospital.

Are donation tax deductible?
Yes, all donation are tax receiptable to the full-extent provided by Revenue Canada. Highland view Regional Hospital Foundation is a registered charitable foundation and must follow the rules and guidelines set out by Revenue Canada in order to maintain its' charitable status.

Do other Hospitals have Foundation?
Yes, almost every hospital in Canada has a Foundation to raise funds for equipment, medical research, programs and services not funded by government money.

How can I help?
The Foundation needs volunteers to help stuff envelopes, pick up coin boxes and help at events. If you would like to volunteer please call the Foundation office at 902-667-5400 ext.6126.

And, please remember your Hospital Foundation when you are making in memoriam gifts and annual donation or pledges.

Can I control where my donations are spent?

Yes. A list of much needed equipment is included. If you want your equipment to support one of those pieces of equipment please note this on your donation form or cheque.
