Janes honored as 2010 Foundation Volunteer of the Year

AMHERST, NS (2010-04-24)  The Cumberland Health Care Foundation was pleased to announce that local businessman Bob Janes was awarded the 2010 Volunteer of the Year Award during its annual Foundation Dinner held on Saturday, April 24th at the Amherst Regional High School.

With Canada’s national volunteer week wrapping up on April 24th and a slogan of “Volunteers – a work of heart!” it was extremely fitting that the recipient of the award has spent a lifetime, both in front of and behind the scenes, building a healthy and caring community for others from what he believes in his heart to be the right thing to do for others.

Janes, a local businessman and active Rotarian has been the Chair of Camp Tidnish for almost two decades, was the first male president of a hospital auxiliary, and is an active Board member and volunteer of the Cumberland Health Care Foundation.   Janes has previously served as a Sunday school teacher, as a board member of Family & Children Services, the YMCA, and the Amherst Golf Club.   A lover of theatre and the arts, Janes voluntarism was integral in bringing theatre facilities to the Amherst Regional High School.

“We’re extremely fortunate that Bob has contributed so much time and effort to the regional hospital foundation above and beyond the significant amount he does with the hospital auxiliary,” said David Wood, Chair of the Cumberland Health Care Foundation, “he never seeks recognition for what he does.  He steps up to the plate, again and again because he believes in his heart about helping others.   It would be difficult to find a better example of someone who does things simply because it’s good for the community.”

12.5 million Canadians volunteer with countless agencies and community projects in Canada and donate almost 2.1 billion volunteer hours last year.   National Volunteer Week was first proclaimed in 1943 as an initiative to draw the public's attention to the vital contribution of women to the war effort on the home front.  In the late 1960s, the focus was revived and broadened to include all community volunteers.

In 2009, the Cumberland Health Care Foundation benefitted from more than 800 hours of volunteer service from over 60 volunteers.   The Foundation is also the lead external financial supporter of the Cumberland Health Authority’s Volunteer Program which recruits, trains, and places volunteers in all 5 County hospitals in addition to providing volunteer support for public health, mental health, and palliative care programs.  More than 4,100 hours were donated by close to 100 volunteers in 2009 to support hospital patients and clients in Cumberland.

The Cumberland Health Care Foundation is a registered Canadian not-for-profit charity dedicated to enhancing the provision of a high standard of health care within Cumberland County by raising funds and supporting new and improved services, programs, equipment and facilities.
