Foundation Dinner Results 2009

AMHERST, NS (April 30th, 2009) – The Cumberland Health Care Foundation (CHCF) is very pleased with the results of its annual fundraising dinner held on Saturday evening – April 25th at the Amherst Regional High School. A fundraising initiative of the Cumberland Health Care Foundation, this 11th annual event saw close to $22,000 being raised in support of the Cumberland Health Care Careers Bursary Program.

In confirming the approximate total raised CHCF Chair, David Wood, commented on the level of both team work and community commitment to healthcare that brought about such great results. “Despite what we’ve been hearing about the economy, this was our largest turnout for the event with people scrambling to get tickets at the last moment.” said Wood.

“When it comes to healthcare in Cumberland County, our communities are very aware of its importance,” continued Wood while acknowledging the event would not be the success it is without the generosity of the donors to the Foundation including the artists, craftspeople and local businesses and the numerous volunteers that continually help to make it such an incredible evening.

Wood also extended a special appreciation to Jost Vineyards Limited of Malagash who were the lead sponsor of the evening and the Amherst Lions Club for their assistance with the hospitality aspect.

The 2009 Distinguished Service Award for Healthcare Philanthropy in Northern Nova Scotia was presented to long-time Amherstonian, Phyllis Cameron. For more than a decade Cameron has been involved with raising money for local healthcare through the Cumberland Health Care Foundation and served as its Chair for a decade. During that decade more than ten million dollars was raised under her direction and commitment.

Bursary recipient, Charlene Cormier thanked those in attendance for their support of the bursary program. She is one of two bursary recipients completing studies this years and returning to Cumberland County to work in one of its five hospitals. “To date this program has brought a dozen skilled healthcare workers back home to work,” stated Foundation Chair, David Wood. “Overall 23 have been enrolled in the program, 12 are back, another 11 are still completing their studies, and we’re getting ready to add more candidates to the bursary program this coming June.”

The 2009 Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Foundation volunteer, Stan Williams. Williams first began volunteering when the annual holiday campaign “Light the Way” was initiated in the mid 90s and soon after with the annual charity golf tournament. Since retirement, he has continued to volunteer with the charity golf tournament held each August – the Highland Classic.

The Cumberland Health Care Foundation is a registered Canadian not-for-profit charity dedicated to enhancing the provision of a high standard of health care within Cumberland County by raising funds and supporting new and improved services, programs, equipment and facilities.
