AMHERST, NS (June 12, 2008) – The staff and patients of the Medical unit were seeing angels on the lawn this week as a group of Scotiabank employees descended as gardening volunteers outside of the Palliative care rooms at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.
"Being up here to visit Mom, I know how important the hospital and staff are, how busy they are taking care of the patients," said Maria Campbell, manager Scotiabank Amherst Centre branch, "I saw the empty flower beds and thought about how our staff could help do something for the patients and staff". The employees of the Scotiabank Amherst Centre branch held small fundraisers to help purchase perennials and a guardian angel for the beds with the bank matching the funds raised.
"For us," continued Campbell, it’s not only part of our commitment to the community through the bank, but personally every one of us knows what it’s like to either be in hospital or having a family member of friend be here. When I asked my co-workers if anyone wanted to help – it was unanimous, every one of them volunteered.”
This is the second year at the new regional hospital where volunteers have been pitching in to help beautify the grounds to the benefit of patients and their families, staff, and visitors. Eight raised beds were donated for the project in the summer of 2007 and were adopted by various departments of the hospital. Two of the beds were built directly outside of the palliative care rooms to provide a calming view in a time of need, 2 near the main entrance, 2 near emergency, and 1 near the cafeteria area.
"The hospital staff has also been bringing perennials and other plants in from their own gardens this year for the beds surrounding the hospital," said Joe Gauthier managing director of the Cumberland Health Care Foundation, "and we were able to secure a repeat donation of a truck load of annuals this year." The Foundation also manages the Holly Spicer Healing Garden located next to the intensive care unit which is frequented by patients, staff, and their families.
The Cumberland Health Care Foundation is a registered Canadian not-for-profit charity dedicated to enhancing the provision of a high standard of health care within Cumberland County by raising funds and supporting new and improved services, programs, equipment and facilities.
