Golf
tourney raises $20,000
by Sam McNeish, The
Amherst Daily News
(continued from page A1)
"These community initiatives include our volunteer coordinator program
and bursary program, both supported entirely by the foundation,"
she added.
She said the Foundation purchased a new piece of equipment
for obstetrics recently that had a price tag of over $200,000
thus fundraising at the highest level this year will be a
necessity.
Former premier and MLA Roger Bacon auctioned off a number
of items following completion of play.
During the auction it was discovered two teams had finished
the event in a draw at 13 under par, thus a playoff was necessary
to determine the winner.
The teams of GlaxcoSmithKline and the Roche/Baer played the
par three ninth hole. Roche- Baer was selected to go first
and their total four-man score on the hole was 19. GlaxcoSmithKline,
playing second had each of their shots on the green in two
for a total of eight and after it was apparent they would
win the hole outright, Roche-Baer conceded the hole and the
victory.
The winning team was comprised of Jamie Matthews, Dave Elliot,
Mac Davis, and Andy Davis.
Numerous prizes were available throughout the day highlighted
by four hole-in-one prizes. Those included cars from Amherst
Toyota and Amherst Chrysler and $25,000 cash prizes from
Barnes Insurance and RBC Royal Bank.
The AMherst Daily News served as presenting sponsor this
year while Poly Cello and Pfizer are platinum sponsors along
with ING and the Amherst Golf Club. Silver sponsors include
Astra Zeneca, GlaxoSmithKline and Roche-Baer while other
supporters include Hicks LeMoine law office, the Cumberland
Shrine Club, Oxford Area Lions Club, William Nycum and Associates.
Tim Horton's/Wendy's, and others. In total, over 80 local
businesses and companies gave their support to the tournament
and Swan said this in itself is a remarkable feat.
"The support we have here, across Cumberland, an even as far away as Memramcook
is incredible," she said.
