The Cumberland Health Care Auxiliary (CHCA) is a very dedicated and active Auxiliary, with its mandate to purchase equipment and other services as requested by the Cumberland County Health Care Centre. This Auxiliary was formerly known as the Highland View Regional Hospital Auxiliary. It is not known what the actual start date was but there was a cookbook sold around 1903 when the first hospital was built. It has had many name changes over the years.

Funds are raised by and through the Treats and Treasures Gift Shoppe (open Monday to Friday 9:30am – 4pm & 6pm – 8pm: Saturday & Sunday from 1 to 4pm); the Auxiliary Coffee Shop (open Monday to Friday 6:30am until 7pm), Highland Fling (held the 2nd Saturday in May in time for Mother’s Day); Cent-A-Meal is held at our Valentine Membership Social in February; Christmas Bake & Craft Sale (held the last Friday in November at the CRHCC); Reader’s Digest “Books Are Fun” Sale held spring and fall also at the CRHCC) and a Jewelry Fundraiser sponsored by a member.

The Annual Highland Fling celebrates its 29th year in 2011. This is a community event held every year the second Saturday in May, just in time for Mother’s day, and all funds raised are donated to the Auxiliary to purchase special pieces of equipment. A Button Raffle is held with 25-30 prizes donated by businesses, organizations and supporters. The event is held at the Amherst Curling Club and includes 35-40 booths operated again by supporters, organizations and non-profits with all the proceeds going to the Auxiliary.   Booths include Carnations for Mom, Craft & Treasures, Bake Table, Desserts, Lobster Rolls, Doc’s Dogs, Tea, Coffee Muffins & Chowder, Bingo, Book Fair, Lobster Raffle, Cake Walk, Blood Pressure, the Vinyl Multi-Media Cafe, Blood Pressures, Raffles and more. Many donations are also received from churches, organizations and individuals.

The Auxiliary members support the Maternity and Children’s Ward by donating Read to Me Hats and books, games, puzzles and various other items as required. A Basket of Baby Gifts is donated to the first Christmas Baby and the first New Years Baby. Plush animals are also purchased and donated to Day Surgery for young patients.

The members donate gifts at our Christmas Party to the Christmas for Kids program and the Christmas Food Boxes.

This Auxiliary is a member of the Nova Scotia Association of Health Auxiliaries (NSAHA) and the Canadian Association of Health Auxiliaries (CAHA). Funds are allocated to send members to annual meetings of both Associations. Some of our executive members have represented our Auxiliary on the Board of the NSAHA and have held positions of Regional Chair, Newsletter Editor, Education Officer, Secretary and Vice President.

Member training is also a key interest and funds are made available for many of members to attend Education Seminars and other training events such as the Northern Regional Meetings twice a year. Every fourth year members are involved in the planning and participation of the Annual Meeting for the NSAHA.

In 2006, the Board of Directors of the Cumberland Health Care Foundation were thrilled to present the Annual Distinguished Service Award to the Cumberland Health Care Auxiliary.

The Auxiliary meets the second Thursday of each month at 7:30pm in Boardroom 1 & 2 at the Cumberland Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan.

The Auxiliary is open to both men and women. New members welcome.
