“Classic Cup” brought home

AMHERST, NS (August 7, 2009) – After three years of being won by companies located outside of Cumberland, a team from PolyCello has brought their name to one of the longest-standing charity golf tournaments in the County.
“It’s wonderful to not only have seen the crew from PolyCello win the Classic Cup,” said David Wood, Chair of the Cumberland Health Care Foundation, “but that it went to a local company that has always supported healthcare locally.”
Historically, the Classic has been one of the more expensive charity tournaments to play with a greater portion of pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies located elsewhere participating. “We we’re a bit worried about team registrations this year,” Wood continued, “we were told by quite a few previous corporate supporters that the downturn in markets had meant a reduction in dollars available to support hospital foundation golf tournaments.”
A drive of encouraging local players by the volunteer led Highland Classic Committee over the past few years helped to insulate the tournament from what could have been dismal results due to the economic downturn in North America.
“We we’re lucky and fortunate that we managed to gain approximately a 20% new team rate from the County, said Wood, “and we’re extremely thankful for the many committed residents and companies of Cumberland who believed that the Classic Charity event is a tournament worth supporting.”
Despite the brief threat of showers on an otherwise hot Friday afternoon, 33 teams hit the greens of the Amherst Golf Course to play the 14th annual Highland Classic Charity tournament. Over $30,000 was raised in support of the Cumberland Health Care Foundation for local healthcare initiatives.
“We’re thankful of those pharmaceutical & medical equipment companies that did commit this year,” said Wood, “there weren’t as many of them and the sponsorship levels were down but the few that did play gave back to the markets they operate in and understood the importance of the work done by hospital foundations.”
Although there were no winners of the four $30,000 hole-in-ones, the following teams and individuals took the following categories.
