Local company helping to make strides in healthcare
At the 10th Annual Foundation dinner of the Cumberland Health Care Foundation, one of Cumberland County’s largest employers, PolyCello, was awarded the 2008
Distinguished Service Award for Healthcare Philanthropy in
Northern Nova Scotia.
The award is presented annually by the Foundation to an individual, group, or company from Cumberland County who has contributed continuously to the enhancement of improved healthcare and medical services for all residents.
“PolyCello and their staff have been strong, consistent supporters of healthcare for County residents,” said Foundation chair, David Wood. “They’re the kind of company that looks after not only their employees but others in the county by investing in health and wellness in the area.”
Since its inception in 1956, PolyCello has grown to become one of Canada’s most specialized packaging manufacturers, serving some of the best known brands in North America. Family-owned and operated, PolyCello employs 350 people in its Amherst, Nova Scotia and Belleville, Ontario facilities.
“On behalf of PolyCello and all of our employees, I am honored to accept the 2008 Distinguished Service Award for Healthcare Philanthropy”, said Stephen Emmerson, PolyCello’s President and CEO. “Giving back to the community in which our employees live and work is one of PolyCello’s core values.”
“We’re quite pleased to have PolyCello and their employees as supporters of the Foundation’s work,” continued Wood. “They were there when the community needed a new regional hospital. When growth occurred and a new operating room and updated diagnostic equipment were needed, they again stepped up to the plate. They help to illustrate what a company can do for the health of their employees, their families, and the community they operate in by participating locally and making it happen.”
PolyCello has also continued to help beyond the hospital arena by supporting other organizations promoting health and wellness such as the Kidney Foundation (Amherst branch), the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society and the United Way of Cumberland. Health and wellness also benefited from their support of physical fitness through the Amherst Curling Club, the Amherst Junior Ramblers, and the Cumberland YMCA.
Academic achievement is another area of a vested interest for PolyCello with educational bursaries and scholarships being given to students in Amherst, River Hebert, and Springhill.
“The Cumberland Health Care Foundation provides our community with vital services, programs and equipment,” added Stephen Emmerson. “PolyCello takes great pleasure in supporting the community in which we live and work and is proud to support the Foundation’s efforts.”
